Veramaris algal oil was recently recognized by a non-GMO standards in Germany. Evonik Vice President of Communication, Jürgen Kauter said to Feed Navigator that Veramaris manufactures algal oil containing DHA+EPA from the marine algae Schyzochrytium sp. which is not a genetically modified organism (GMO). Moreover, sugar used to grow the algae does not contain any GMOs. Kauter told the publication that sugar as a substrate is sourced from global sugar markets from wheat, conventional and non-conventional corn and sugar beet to ensure no GMOs. Therefore, Veramaris algal oil should not contain or consist of GMOs and it should not be labelled as GMO. It does not contain ethoxyquin either, so it complies with all applicable European regulations concerning traceability and labelling food and feed products.

Alternative ingredients are gaining acceptance, but there is a general call for transparency in the supply chain after Veramaris and Skretting team up to provide Lingalaks marine algae oil for salmon industry.
